Hi ,
I am pregnant and my due date is end of January . I am not a permanent resident but my application has been sent . I do not have a health card yet . My husband is canadian born and raised . Our baby unfortunately has a congenital heart disease and will need surgery soon after birth . What I need to know is how and if he/she is automatically covered because of being born in Canadian soil as well as being the baby of a Canadian .

Yes the child will be covered at birth if your husband is Canadian and is a resident of Saskatchewan. Not familiar with when you will qualify for coverage as a spouse but you will need a lot of extra scans and potential tests if your unborn child has a congenital defect plus meeting with the paediatric cardiac surgeon before birth. You also may be advised to have a c-section to lessen the stress on the child. On top of that Saskatchewan many not have the specialists needed and you may need to give birth in another province. If you were a Canadian PR and already had coverage many of these things would be covered but without it you are looking at more costs. Not sure where you currently live and what services are available to you and how much savings you have but you’ll have to factor in increases expenses if you give birth in Canada.

Thank you very much for your response. We had factored in the costs of delivery and doctor visits etc prior to birth . What we had not factored in was the future surgeries that baby will need . We are seeing a specialist for both myself and baby and paying for that. We will find a way to cover expenses for baby post birth if need be of course but was wondering about his/her canadian health coverage as it would be a tremendous help. We are looking to having to pay for transport and accommodation if we need to go to another province for surgeries. Just hospital bills may add up. Currently in SK

If your husband is a PR or Canadian the baby will be covered. It is your expenses, delivery expenses and any transfer p/living expenses for delivery that will not be covered which will be higher than average.

Thanks again for your response and help. I will look into this as soon as posible. Taking advantage of your kindness. Would you know whom or where I should go to to inquire about baby or if we need to wait till birth?

I guarantee the child is covered if your husband is a citizen. You can contact the Saskatchewan health card office.
