hi guys,
i have a question about public health care, while waiting for PR. my spouse added me to his work insurance program, but it covers only some stuff, not regular doctor visit. can he add me somehow to OHIP (we are in Toronto)? I read thing like this in one thread, and I am confused, as I thought as a visitor I can't use public health care. We applied outland.
Thanks!

Are we talking about outland or inland ?? if its inland than your considerd to be eligible for OHIP uppon recieving first stage approval (AIP) you just take the letter with you to their office with a couple of IDs that have your signiture and photo on them after that you wait three months.
I've seen other more recent posts also, but my search didn't bring them up.

Visitors do not qualify for OHIP. That is why people get visitor medical insurance.

Extended benefits are pretty much always contingent on having provincial coverage first. If the insurance company finds out you didn't actually qualify for their coverage because you didn't have OHIP, they could make you pay any claims back.

There have been a few people on here who managed to get added to their spouse's company benefits only to find out later that they didn't actually qualify because they didn't have provincial healthcare.

As others mentioned, actually check with your spouse's employer benefits provider to see if you are allowed to be on the plan without having OHIP. My employer uses Sunlife for benefits in Toronto, and they required full OHIP coverage before you get access to any of the other stuff (like dental, RMT, glasses, etc)

As for getting OHIP, read the posts in this thread on how to fast track the OHIP process for outland applicants currently living in Canada. It involves getting rejected at a services ontario OHIP office, then appealing to the OERC. http://www.canadavisa.com/canada-immigration-discussion-board/important-ohip-eligibility-info-for-all-pr-applicants-residing-in-ontario-t56695.0.html;msg2518001#msg2518001
