Hey every one
i was reading about new immigrants in Ontario and i saw that bellow;
Eligibility

Ontario residents are eligible for provincially funded health coverage (OHIP). Generally, to be eligible for Ontario health coverage you must :

be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or among one of the newcomer to Canada groups who are eligible for OHIP as set out in Ontario’s Health Insurance Act ; andbe physically present in Ontario for 153 days in any 12-month period; andbe physically present in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately after establishing residency in the province; andmake your primary place of residence in Ontario.

OHIP coverage normally becomes effective three months after the date you establish residency in Ontario. The ministry strongly encourages new and returning residents to purchase private health insurance in case you become ill during the OHIP waiting period.

my question is that i can not go from Canada after my first landing before 152 days for OHIP Eligibility ?
actually i want to stay ij Canada in start 1 month and then want to go out side Canada for 5 months after my first landing and then i will return for permanently so i can not go ? if i want to OHIP ?
please help me so i can make my decision.
regards

you can register for OHIP once you have landed.

However, in addition to your passport+COPR, you need to have something which shows your name/address on it.
Something like a :

-Lease in your name of rental, auto insurance, etc
-or monthly bank statement
-or pay stub
etc
(the list of docs is here: http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetAttachDocs/014-9998E-82~1/$File/9998-82E.pdf)

Or, if you apply for the Ontario Driving License, or the Ontario Photo Card, it gets delivered in 2-3 weeks. It has your name/address on it,
once you have it you can register for OHIP, coverage will start 90 days from date of arrival/landing.

Once you have the card, you can visit doctor, etc and you will be covered. You can accomplish this easily within a month.

Basically, ServiceOntario just wants to see a "proof of address" document. As soon as you have such document you can register.
Card will arrive a day or 2 before coverage starts.

Whether or not you will lose eligibility, you can ask them once you receive the card. There is a clause where they can allow people to leave for some period without losing coverage, as long as you tell them(with some proof). Call them or speak to them.

Ontario OHIP could constitute your action a form of fraud as you are suppose to be a resident of Ontario for 153 days out of 183 (5 out of 6 months) immediately after you established yourself as resident of Ontario. You are considered a resident the day you land in Ontario as PR. In other words, you can't skip out a month later after landing as PR only to come back 5 months later and assume 3 month qualification period has passed while you were gone 5 months.

http://www.health.gov.on.ca/en/public/publications/ohip/ohip_eligibility.aspx

•you make your primary place of residence in Ontario; and generally,
•you are in Ontario for at least 153 days of the first 183 days immediately following the date you establish residence in Ontario (you cannot be absent for more than 30 days during the first 6 months of residence); and
•you are in Ontario for at least 153 days in any 12-month period.

As Screetch said, you would not be eligible for OHIP until 3 months after you get back.
So your 3 month waiting period would not even start until landing + 1 month in Canada + 5 months outside Canada... and only then when you return to Canada you could get OHIP 3 months after that. So in total it would be 1 + 5 + 3 = 9 months after landing.

After you get back to Canada after 5 months outside, make sure you have private medical coverage for 3 months time.

The rules are the same for citizens or PRs. Even Canadian citizens returning to Ontario have a 3 month waiting period and need to establish residency by committing to stay 153 out of first 183 days upon returning to Canada, to get OHIP.

Sure she can go. And so can you. It just means your 3-month count to start OHIP coverage, won't start until after you return to Canada. OHIP is not mandatory to have, it's entirely your choice.

And note if you have conditional PR, you and your wife MUST cohabit for 2 years FROM YOUR LANDING DATE, in order not to violate condition 51 of your PR. This cohabitation can be anywhere in the world, as long as you are living together.

as rob and screech have pointed out, you can not apply for OHIP upon landing if you plan to leave 1 month later and spend 5 months out of CAnada. You must apply for OHIP once you return to canada, and wait the 3 month period to receive the coverage. Once you receive that coverage, after returning and waiting 3 months, you must remain in that province for 153 days to maintain coverage!

asking the question multiple times on the same and different threads is not going to give you the answer you are obviously looking for. if you're not going to be in the country, then OHIP isn't going to be an option until you get back and live in canada long term.

From what you are telling us about your plans, you are better off waiting until after you return from your 5 months absence from Canada. Once you come back for good, then you can apply for OHIP.

You can "apply" for OHIP the day after landing if you have one of the "proof of residency" documents: http://www.forms.ssb.gov.on.ca/mbs/ssb/forms/ssbforms.nsf/GetFileAttach/014-9998E-82~1/$File/9998-82E.pdf

You would even get the OHIP card in the mail. But your actual health coverage would not start until 3 months after you return to Canada for good, no matter if you have the card or not.
I had a valid OHIP card with me while I was living in US. I was even able to "renew" my OHIP using my brother's address. My car was still registered under my brothers address, still had ontario plates. Ontario service thought I was still "living" in ontario. Once I moved back for good, ontario service took my OHIP card back and had to wait 3 months to get a new one, even though the first one was valid. Ontario service even asked me if I ever used it while I was living in US. Told them no. If I had used it, I could have been charged with fraud but since I didn't use it, they can't charge me with anything.

So that is why I say wait til you get back after 5 months absence. If you got your ohip card while away, ontario service may take your original card and you end up waiting 3 months for new card again.
