Question #12 on the application, I have a SIN number so I checked yes. However, I never had a job and was never required to file taxes. How am I supposed to fill out question #12 on the application?

You only need to file taxes if you ever worked. The requirement for citizenship is that you must have filed taxes if , under tax rules, you were required to file taxes. In your case, since you were a student during the whole period, you do not need to file taxes. Just check "No" under "Required to File" and "No" under "Filed".

As mreda13 correctly points out, it is wrong that one needs to have filed taxes for three years to be eligible for citizenship. Instead, the rule is that one has to comply with tax filing obligations for three years. That is something very different. If someone wasn't required to file taxes (like the OP), then they are in compliance with the tax filing obligations, even if they didn't file.

Side note: Even if you are not required to file taxes it is almost always benificial to file them anyways. You get GST/HST credit and also education credits.

Hi,
I landed on December 20th 2014. I filed taxes for 2014,2015,2016. I was working in 2015. In 2016 I was on maternity leave and then unemployment. What should I check on question “required to fill” for year 2014 and 2016? Thanks

Hi,
You were still required to file even if you you were on mat leave and unemployed. So, you should click yes on both questions.

No. That is not the case. Every student is required to file income tax at the end of each tax year. This is why each student is issued T2202A in order to claim provincial and federal education tax credit. This money always helps after graduation to cushion the sudden effect of taxation. A few years ago, it was difficult for student to get off campus work permit as they have to prove they meet 70% average, and it is reviewed every year in order to maintain eligibility. However, this requirement was removed in the last days of Stephen Harper so all students can work freely for Max. of 20 hours per week. Let us not forget that foreign students are only a fraction of the total number of students studying in Canada every year. Hence, the law does not differentiate between Canadians and non-canadians when it comes to Taxes. In fact, many students claim GST/HST rebate during income tax filing.
Furthermore, Masters and PhD students who are on scholarship are issued T4A slip for evidence of their income even though untaxed. You cannot receive any money without you having a social insurance number. So if you forgot to file the taxes as a student, it is never too late to file it.

Hope this helps! Proudly Canadian.
