Hello,

Have H1B OWP valid till Nov 2026 and stamped in passport...plan travel to toronto from india end of this month

1. Do we need seperate TRV visa to travel to canada ?
2.What documents to carry to activate permit ?
2. Do we need to pay any fees at airport when we activate work permit?
3. Apart from permit do we also get SIN there ?

Note: due to layoff my h1b got revoked so i am in india now

If you’re travelling on an Indian passport, the work permit itself is not a travel document. You still need a valid TRV in your passport to board the flight and enter Canada. If your passport already has a valid Canadian TRV stamped in it, you normally don’t need a separate second visa.

To have the work permit issued/activated at the border, carry your passport, valid TRV, and your Port of Entry Letter of Introduction showing the work permit approval. IRCC also recommends carrying any supporting documents relevant to the approval. The CBSA officer makes the final decision and prints the actual work permit at entry.

You normally don’t pay another work permit fee at the airport if the work permit application was already approved and the fees were paid as part of that application. Airport fees are relevant when someone is actually applying for a permit at the port of entry, which is a different situation.

You do not automatically receive a SIN at the airport. Once the work permit is issued, you apply for a SIN separately through Service Canada, online, by mail, or in person.

Since your H-1B was revoked after the Canadian OWP was approved, I’d also carry the original Canadian approval documents and be ready to explain the change in your US status if asked. I wouldn’t assume the H-1B cancellation by itself cancels the Canadian permit, but the border officer still decides admissibility at entry.
