Hi everyone,

I got my PR recently and was wondering about Citizenship process. Am I correct in describing Citizenship process after PR below ?

Step 1) Spend 2 Years In Canada (I was on student/work permit and can claim 1 year)

Step 2) Apply for "Citizenship Grant" - Current processing time is 12 months. This step will also have English test and citizenship interview.

Step 3) Take the oath and you will be granted citizenship

Step 4) Order a "Certificate of Citizenship" (Current Processing Time - 5 months)

Step 5) Get a Canadian Passport by showing "Certificate Of Citizenship"

Thanks for any help.

1. Yes, A minimum of 2 years as PR in Canada (assuming the 1 year of Pre PR days falls within your eligibility period). Most of the people out here would advise to apply after having a healthy buffer of extra days, just in case.
2. If you had already taken your IELTS exam for PR application, you can use the same towards the citizenship application. I think you meant "citizenship test" and interview.
3. Yes
4. No need to order anything. On the day of your oath, (or rather immediately after your oath ceremony) you would be given your citizenship certificate.
5. Wait for at least 2 business days (for your citizenship to register within their database) and apply for Canadian passport

Good luck!

Edit- This is assuming the current rules remains the same for this duration. Keep an eye on this forum to ensure that you are updated about any changes/development.

Reply above covered all of your questions :) I would second that having a buffer is best, look through the forum for posts by @dpenabill to read more about this.

1. Be careful, If I remember correctly, they count each day as a half a day, so you'd need to have been in Canada for 2 years before PR.
2. yes
3.Yes
4. No. You get a certificate of Citizenship at the Oath Ceremony.
5. Yes, get after taking your oath by 2 business days or when ECAS says complete online.
