Hi all, so right now me and my partner are applying for permanent residency. I'm a Canadian citizen sponsoring him (who is Australian).

He was here on a working holiday visa (Started June 28th, 2013) which is set to expire at the end of June, we applied for another one (and even got accepted) however on that application he marked his status as Single because we both thought common-law meant 2+ years relationship (yes I know how dumb it is to assume things).

We have a lawyer helping us with the PR application so we didn't realize this error until she dug around and too much time had passed- now we have the entry letter for a working holiday visa but we still want to correct the application information (the lawyer and both of us agree we should fix this before submitting the PR app).

Has anyone been in this kind of situation? Are we screwed? I'm hoping we can just contact CIC and tell them a mistake was made..everything else in all our applications EVER has been rock solid so I don't see why this would ruin us but it's still worrying at the moment.

Any help appreciated.

He should definitely correct the WHV application ASAP!

Keep dialing the CIC Call Centre and pray that you can [eventually] get through to someone.

Good luck!

Yes, I think you should continue trying to correct this, then apply. It should not be an issue - because common-law status is 2 years for some government departments, so I would hope CIC would see this as an understandable mistake. You can just explain that you thought common-law meant two years together because .... It should be OK.
