I realize we have to fill out the B4 form.

What I would like to confirm is that household goods from Mexico, including washing machine/dryer, air conditioner, TV, which were bought and used in Mexico, plus older things originally from Canada (like a large musical instrument) can enter (re-enter) Canada and not be charged duty.

That is, I'm mainly concerned about avoiding duty, since all items are used and are not for selling. I'm a Canadian citizen who has been out of Canada in Mexico since March 2012 and he is a new PR. He is going to enter Canada in early January and have our belongings follow and I will be entering end December with some stuff in the car like art paints that can't go with the movers.

Is there any special way we need to go about this to avoid hassles and cost?

Thanks in advance!

Assuming that you have been residing outside of Canada for a period of one year or more, the goods you return with are exempt. In order to avoid hassles you will need to have a list describing what goods will follow you. You can read about it here

Can't put my finger on a reference, but for your husband, as a new PR the goods he brings are also exempt.
