Hi friends,

I have just recently been granted PR for Canada and submitted my and family passports for visa stamping that I am hopeful to get back soon. My wife is presently expecting and is currently in her 5th month. I am planning to travel with my wife and son during November (which makes 26-27th pregnancy week) or during December (33rd or 34th pregnancy week). I need to know, if my wife will be getting free Canadian health care for child delivery once we land there or we have to pay for the delivery expenses. If we have to pay then what would be the cost of that. I am planning to travel to Montreal (Qubec) most likely or Toronto (Ontario).

My second question is that till which week the Gynecologist accepts the patient for delivery. I need to know this so that I may plan my movement accordingly.

Lastly, I have 2 years old son and moving to Canada for first time. It will be difficult for me to take care of my son, pregnant wife and getting settled for new life there as well. Is there any option that I may sponsor some relative (sister in law or father in law) to travel with my family once we leave for Canada so that they may help me. They may return back after child delivery. I will really appreciate the experienced feedback as I need to plan my things accordingly.

Where will you be settling? You will need to remain in the province or you could be asked to repay your healthcare expenses. Depends on the province but usually you must remain for over 6 months but check each province. You get maternity care immediately in Quebec but not other healthcare and there is a 3 month wait period for healthcare in Ontario. Would encourage you to read what is covered and not covered and what is covered by extended healthcare benefits that you may receive through your employer. Obstetricians accept patients at any time but usually only take a certain number of patients due in each month. At the end of a pregnancy you will have to seek out an OB who will take your wife on as a patient. If you show up at a hospital in labour there is an OB on call. Wouldn't recommend no prenatal care for the safety of your wife and child but there will be a doctor available at the hospital. Often your own OB doesn't deliver your baby. It is whoever I on call in their practice.

It will be quite difficult to invite a relative to help you right after you move to Canada. Helping with childcare is considered working which you can't do as a visitor but you also need a valid reason for a relative to visit you so soon after your arrival. If your relative has an extensive travel history to countries that require a visa (like US. UK, Australia, etc.), has strong ties to her home country (job, property, family she cares for, etc.) and has a good amount of her own savings or savings with spouse these things will definitely help. The relative should only ask to visit for 2-3 weeks. Do you have a job lined up in Canada? That would help show that you are more established in Canada.
