Hi,

I moved to Vancouver based on work permit visa on March 2008. Since then, I am working as a skilled IT professional in a software company. My company requires me to move to US in about a year through L1 visa although I'd love to stay in Vancouver.

Can I apply for Canadian PR on my own? How likely is that I get a PR after applying? After getting PR, I might decide to join a different company (or even do a Masters degree in Canada).

How much would it cost for application?

Thanks.

You are qualified under the CEC Federal class to Immigrate to Canada,You could also study a Masters,Get a degree and get your PR through International Graduate of PNP of BC,and your Family goes with you

Are you talking about Canadian Experience Class? I just read the 'Who can apply' section. They say "a temporary foreign worker with at least two years of full-time (or equivalent) skilled work experience in Canada", but I have only 8 months work experience in Canada (although I worked for about 2 years in India, where I hold citizenship).. can I still apply?

The main purpose behind getting a PR for me is 'freedom' so that I can live without a job (temporarily) if I choose! Or do freelancing. Or...

You can not apply for CEC until you've worked 2 years. You can apply for PNP with your employer. Or you can apply as a skilled worker.

Thats what I meant,Sorry,Either get another employer while your work permit is still valid and Apply under Skilled worker of PNP or Study and apply under International Graduate of PNP

My work permit is tied to my current employer. It cannot be used with other employers. Can I apply on my own (rather than through my employer) while still being in the job?

You can apply on your own as a skilled worker or under CEC if you qualify for that but for PNP you need the employers help. If your current employer will not apply for PNP with you, you can look for another job, get an LMO and then go to the border and get a new work permit. You do not even have to tell your current employer about this although it would be nice of you to give him at least a 1 week notice.
