Hello all.

I wonder if anyone has experience of getting the police certificates from Italy if, like me, you currently live in the UK. Unfortunately, the Italy Embassy in London simply referred me to their website, so I don't know if I have to write to the Procura della Repubblica in Rome or Padova (where I last lived). In addition, given that one has to get a "marca da bollo" and "legalizzazione", how is one meant to do that or pay for it from abroad?

Any help would be appreciated.

Hey Sniprat,

I have done it from outside of Italy, it's a bit of a long process, and since you are not in Italy, you will need to pay a third party to do it for you. I'll send you a pm with all the details!

After thinking about it, I don't think that you can read private messages yet as it is your first posting. So here it is.

to get the documents from outside of Italy, you can use a third party company. I used "prontobollo", it's expensive, but it gets it done....

here you have http://www.prontobollo.com/certificati/casellario-carichi-pendenti/
From CIC website you have to get 2 different types of documents:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/europe/italy.asp

On CIC website it says that you can ask to the nearest embassy, when I called the nearest embassy they were not helpful, so I decided to go ahead and do it online.

Once they obtain the Police Checks for you, you need it to be translated. I can see from their website that they offer translation services, but I have used a different company so I don't know anything about them.

Hope you speak italian ( if you're not italian) as the website is ony in italian!

In bocca al lupo - and let me know if you need help navigating it!

Sweden,

Thanks for that. Few follow up questions:

- how long does it take?
- what do you mean by expensive as it doesn't seem much on the Procura website?

From the website of the Procura in Padova it seems it would take about a week if it went in person which, frankly, I am not averse to.

NOt too sure how long it took. I would say a week for them to get them done, then another week to get it translated ( but I used a different translating company, so maybe it added a little delay).

Total was about 200 euros I think - 85euros for each paper + something for translation (but got a good deal on that one because through somebody I knew etc). Plus fees to get it sent DHL outside of Italy... probably a approximate total of 250euros.

I didn't go to Italy - went through the website. If you're in Italy it's probably easier, but I don't know the procedure.
Good luck,
Sweden

Hey Sweden,

I looked at that company you told me about (thanks) and got in touch with them. They said it would take 70 working days and cost Euro 316. Does that sound right to you?

Thanks again.

Hey Sniprat,

No it doesn't! I'm pretty sure that mine was not that expensive ( but it depends if you asked them to translate as well, I only got them to ask for the certificates, not to translate them, so that might be right), but also the 70 days seems like a lot - I'm pretty sure mine went quicker than that.
I'll go back to my own file and let you know how long it took, but it seems like a lot...
Cheers,
Sweden

Hey again,

so - I went back to my files and checked, and the 70 days seem very odd to me.
I used the "prontobollo" company, and requested 2 documents ( as indicated by CIC website):

n° 1 CARICHI PENDENTI
n° 1 GENERALE-

I had asked for it on the 8th of February and they were delivered to an address in Rome ( to a friend of mine, who took over for the translation part and then sent it to me outside of Italy) on the 14th of February - so about a week later. ( then she took care of the translation and sent it to me a week later).

Price for both Police records was in total 86 euros. Not sure what the 316 euros that you were quoted refers to ( but if you add translation + sending it outside of Italy, that might be the reason).

Good luck,
Sweden

One of the things they said was that would have to get a document confirming my residence in the town I lived (I long ago threw out the permesso di soggiorno).

How did you deal with Prontobollo?

I did everything via mail ( after creating myself a profile on their website and sending my original enquiry), and they responded pretty fast. They were not always flexible, but well - they were quick enough to answer.
I don't remember what type of document I sent them to confirm that I was living in Rome - maybe my "codice fiscale" or my healthcard, not too sure. you might be able to ask for an extract of your file based on your "codice fiscale" maybe they still have your residence address there? not too sure.
Good luck,
Sweden

Just adding this post in case anyone in the future may find it useful.

Do NOT go through a 3rd party service if you can help it. I got quoted nearly E400 and a 19 week wait. It took a lot of digging but you have to apply to the Procura where you last lived in Italy and ensure you download their forms, ie. Turin is not accepted in Padova. They are also ok with ID from overseas if you no longer possess anything like a permesso di soggiorno or codice fiscale.

I paid E7,30 for both certificates and it took 3 weeks (in Christmas post) to arrive. They actually received it on the 4th December and sent it 10th December.

Now to get my application off to the CIC.

Yes, as I said above, worked fine (which amazed me given Italian bureaucracy. I simply stuffed 15 Euros in the envelope... somebody got a few free Euros for their morning espresso, but I got my certificates in a timely manner, which was all that mattered to me.

Hello Sniprat,
I hope this message finds you well.
I have an inquiry regarding Police Certificate for the period which I lived in Italy.
I live 7 months in Cengliano (Treviso, Veneto) and 5 months in Milan.
Could you please let me know, if i need to obtain records from each province individually. Since the website of Treviso is under construction, i can't take the application form for Treviso. What should i do? But, there is inconsistency which i need to clarify. In the webpage of "Procura della Repubblica" of Milan, application form is the same which takes place in the web-site of "Ministera della Giustizia". Doesn't it mean that, the same form is applicable for each province? Because, in your post, you have mentioned that, separate application forms are required for each province.
Second, if the application form is the same for both provinces, do i need to complete the same form twice: for each certificate.
Finally, i would kindly ask you, to list all documents which you place in the envelope and send to Italy.
Thanks for you help in advance.
Yours sincerely
