Hi,

I'm Canadian and my girlfriend is American. We have been dating for 4 years now. As it stands, we are living in our respective countries of origin. I plan to propose to her and get married sometime in the near future. She is planning to start graduate school next year. And I currently work full time in my profession in Canada. It does seem easier from what I've read to get PR in Canada for her than for me in USA. Also I work and make quite a decent income. These are a couple of the concerns I have:

1) is there a difference of where we got married? USA or Canada? If we plan to get PR for her in Canada (she will most likely apply out of country).

2) based on my timeline to get married, she will be in las year of studies, would there be any complications with her PR if she is a student (she will be attending in USA)?

Look forward to your responses!

Cheers

You're probably better off getting married in USA.

The USA is a *little* complicated because every single county (yes, every county) has a different marriage certificate, but the good thing is that Canada sees a marriage certificate from the USA and says "perfect!", whereas a certificate from Canada has to be the "right one" and it has to be the one that you get 6 weeks after the marriage, blah blah blah. Such a hassle.

Get married however and wherever you want to! One thing that I really appreciated was getting married in a REALLY small county in California on New Year's Eve when nobody else was there. We applied for our marriage license, went outside to say our vows and then we stuck around for an extra 15 minutes for the clerk to provide us with a certified copy of our marriage certificate.

As long as she lands as a PR before her COPR expires, it's all good.

Marriage should be about you two and how you want to get married, don't worry about CIC it'll make no difference (just make sure to get some pics taken). Personally I much preferred the ease with which we got married in Vegas!
