Hello guys.

I am a Canadian citizen, planning to get married with an Icelandic citizen soon. I was told to get a document proving my marital status:

"Please note that U.S and Canadian citizens hand in a search of marriage/vital records instead of the certificate of marital status. Just remember that your search for marriage records can´t be older than 8 weeks when we receive the original documents."

Where can I get marriage/vital records like this? I've researched so many options and it's unclear what I should do or where I can obtain these records. Different people say different things. Any advice?

i'm assuming you are talking about the proof of marriage document required for the spousal sponsorship application? if so, this document will not be available until after the marriage is recorded in the municipality you got married in. if you are getting married in canada, then you will need to apply for your marriage certificate through the province you got married in. generally, it's recommended to get the "long form" marriage certificate option, and i believe you can not apply until 6-8 weeks after the marriage. this is because the municipality needs time to record the marriage in their system. if you are in ontario, then you need to apply for it through service ontario i believe. others will confirm.
That's not exactly what I'm talking about my friend, I'm sorry, I should've made it clear that the marriage will take place in Iceland. It's a document that shows I'm not currently married, required for me before the wedding to do it over there.

hi yes, that's why i deleted my comment, as i realized you were talking about documents for getting married. my apologies.

i'm not sure if canada has such a document? i am deferring to those who know better than I do....

Perhaps you should ask the office of the vital statistics of the province where you were born?
