If all goes well (you filled out your application correctly, is not missing any documentation and you don't have any red flags), the sponsor should get an e-mail in 2-3 weeks after the application was mailed out that CIC received the application. After that, the sponsor should get an e-mail that he/she was approved and the file was transferred to the appropriate visa office. You should also be able to check the status of the application on-line using the sponsor's client ID number around this time. It should say sponsor approved and the file has been transferred and received in the visa office. AFter this it can vary but usually it is a long wait until they start looking at your application but varies depending on the visa office.

I don't know what the "AOR" acronym exactly stands for but it basically means some acknowledgement that the application was received (like the e-mail saying CIC received the application)

AOR stands for Acknowledgement of Receipt. It's usually the first sign you get from CIC after sending your applications. It will be something like "This confirms that your application to Sponsor a Member of the Family Class has been received by Citizenship and Immigration Canada (CIC) on [date] on behalf of the following member(s):....".

There are applicants that have never received AOR and never got any sign before SA (Sponsorship Approval), so don't panic if you don't get it. Anyway, the distance between AOR and SA is usually less than a week.
