Getting a Canadian Driver’s License as a New Immigrant

Hi everyone,

I’m posting on behalf of a friend who recently moved to Canada and wants to get a driver’s license. They’re unsure how their foreign license will be recognized and what steps they need to follow.

Do they have to take the knowledge test and road test immediately or is there a way to transfer their existing license?

Any tips on studying for the tests, especially for newcomers who aren’t fluent in English or French, would be great.

Also, recommendations for driving schools that assist immigrants would be really helpful. How long did it take for you?

Depends on the province. Go on the provincial site and check rules as it depends on type and citizenship. Provinces have study books too. Look up local driving school.

It also depends on where your friend is from.

The knowledge test is available in various languages, so it's not a problem.
