Hello,
I'm a German citizen and planning to travel for 4 months in Canada. i arrived 3 weeks ago. For the first weeks I was staying in Toronto.
the officer at the airport got gave a the permission to stay 2 month. This is because when entering the country I could not provide an overview of my financial situation, work contract in Germany etc. immediately. I would be able to provide those documents now.
Normally German citizens are allowed to stay for up 6 months without a visa.

I need to extend the permission to stay as soon as possible. Therefore my question is
Do I need to apply for the permission to stay longer online?
Or can I also leave the country (by travelling to NY, US) and re-enter the country to be allowed to stay another additional 2 months?
The officer attached a note in my passport saying that I need to leave before the 25 th of August and the the permission to stay is only valid for one visit.
Thanks you very much for your help and advice on this.

Going across the US border and getting a new passport stamp is considered a way of extending your stay. You can also apply online or by mail. Just make sure whichever you go about it you show proof of financial support for your visit and have a logical reason for wanting to remain.

You got a visitor record. The CBSA agent cut you some 'minor' slack as you do not appear to be a genuine visitor. I think a border run to the US with the hope of a fresh longer term entry to Canada is a non starter...you risk being bounced back to the US/ Germany. You may also have issues entering the US...under the VWP you need to be entering the US then returning to a country other than Canada or adjacent territory...you don't want CBP to think you want to hang out in the US.

So do you now have proof of your finances that you did not have before? What has changed in your circumstances? Don't bother applying for an extension it won't be approved and you risk being an over stayer. You need to be out by the given date and you have to show up at Immigration for paperwork...in some cases they escort your right to the plane.

I suggest you return to Germany and establish yourself there before returning to Canada. You are in the system and Secondary Inspection will almost always be an experience you will have to face.

Like others have said, if you hop over to the US, you may not be allowed back into Canada with another 2 month stay. They will see in the computer that you were given 2 months in June and why and they will ask you if your situation has changed and whether you can prove it.

You could apply to extend your visitor status online or apply per mail. As long they receive your application before your visit status expires, you will have implied status and may stay as long as you are waiting for an answer.

If you look at the processing times here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/temp.asp you will see that applying to extend the visitor status online takes 57 days and applying via mail is even slower, 90 days.

Before they've even processed your application, you will have your extra 2 months. If they refuse your extension and tell you to leave, you will have another 30 days to get out without risking deportation.

If you want them to approve your extension though so you can stay even longer, you would need to show that you have funds to support yourself without working illegally and that you have insurance to cover emergency and accidents so you are not relying on the tax payer to pick up the bill if something happens to you.
