Hello all,

My name on my passport is written as "N1 N2 N3 N4", were N1 is my first name, N2 is my father's name, N3 is my grandfather's name, and N4 is my father's grandfather's name. This is the naming convention we use in my country, Egypt. We don't really have the Western naming convention that only uses a first name and a last name (and an optional middle name that can even be a relative's name and not necessarily an ancestor's).

However, I would like to identify myself, if I am gonna make it to Canada as:

First Name: N1
Family Name: N4

.. And I will skip N2 and N3 altogether.

Knowing this, what names do you suggest me to put in my PR application under the Given Name(s) and Family Name(s) fields? Would CIC acknowledge this cultural difference and accept that I only include a part of my name in the application, assuming that the rest of my names are actually extra information that would not necessarily be there if I were from another part of the world?

Thanks for your help :)

Hi,

How is it exactly written on your passport ? In that many divisions ?

In that case, you should write N1 in given name, and N4 on family name field.

So you seem to be on the right track ?

I'm from Egypt, too.
For the Given Names, I wrote N1, N2, N3
For the Family Name, I wrote N4

Because you need to write your name EXACTLY as it is written in your passport.
Hope I was helpful!

I am not sure how many sub sections are there for NAME in Egyptian passport, so I had asked.

If there are 4 subsections, N1, N2, N3, N4, then what 'sevagha' said is right, unless 'romar' wants to actually change his name to a shorter one.

Regards

Thank you all for your replies. The Egyptian passport has only a single section for the name, labeled "Name" and has all the four names in sequence as "N1 N2 N3 N4".

In the IMM 0008 form, I thought of putting N1 N2 N3 in the Given Name field and putting N4 in the Family Name field, but then I thought that perhaps it should be the other way around i.e N1 in the Given Name and N2 N3 N4 in the family name, especially that N2 and N3 are actually names of my family/ancestors and are not names that were given to me at birth.

And yes, a part of what I would like to do is to shorten my name to N1 N4, since this is acceptable in Canada, while it isn't in Egypt, where a person must be identified officially by at least three names. So, I was wondering when in the process I should be allowed to choose a single First/Given name and a single Family/Last name, since this is legitimate in Canada.

I recommend you submit your application as I stated, and if God willing your application is approved, then you can apply for a legal name change when you arrive in Canada. But for now, DON'T omit any names!

If you don’t have a family name on your passport or travel document, enter all given
names in the family name field and enter “N/A” or “Not applicable” in the given name field.

My full name in my passport is N1 N2 N3 N4, and there isn't a surname in my passport, just "name". I plan on applying for a student visa, and my acceptance letter has my surname as N3, first name as N1, N2 as middle name. So can I apply for the student visa with writing N1 N2 N3 in the surname section? Or can I write N1 as first name, N2 as middle, and N3 as surname, just like the acceptance letter?

,1, You have it backwards,if you read the instructions, if you don't have a surname, you put all your given names in the surname block and leave given name space blank
