Hello all,

My Canadian girlfriend and I have been living together for the past 12 months in the UK. She is currently on a UK youth mobility visa which runs out in another 12 months time.

I am British and have a university education in computer science as well as 2+ years of industry experience.

It would appear I qualify for the FSW visa as well as qualifying for a family class common-law partner visa.

Basically I am trying to work out which I should apply for. We are currently planning on applying for the family class visa as it appears to be quicker according to CIC and we are also worried about the job cap for the FSW.

Can anyone give any insight to how long their applications took for either kind of visa or have any useful experience with either of these visa applications?

Your help is much appreciated!

Family class - no brainer.

No need to take IELTS. No need to get your education assessed. No need to collect proof of funds. No need to get experience letters. Also likely faster.

Make sure you apply outland and not inland.
