A head nurse has to perform multiple duties in the health care facility. His/her job profiles include not only nursing care but also administration and management of a particular department of the health care facility.
Head Nurse duties and responsibilities.
The duties and responsibilities of a head nurse are:
- Adhere to the hospital's policies and procedures including the vision mission of the institution
- Adhere to hospital's nursing service division policies and procedures
- Ensure compliance to the standards of care accordingly to your respective area of designation
- Maintain and monitor proper attendance and punctuality to ensure that the department is operated in an efficient and cost effective manner.
- Maintain and monitor prescribed uniform and wearing employees ID with the PRC ID, IVT card, ACLS and BLS, ID card, and health card certificate
- Communicate information effectively both verbally and in writing
- Supervise and participate in staff meetings, required in-services, and other hospital activities
- Attend regular trainings offered by accredited professional nursing organizations
- Willingly be rotated in any nursing units and during night shifts as the need arises
- Supervise and monitor admission and discharges respectively with plan of care among patients, relatives and other members of the health team
- Supervise and manage nursing staff in dealing competently with patients having specific health conditions like diabetes, cancer, etc.
- Monitors and checks nursing staff in carrying out physician orders accurately and effectively with legal and ethical considerations
- Institutes nursing interventions consistent with the overall plan of care with special considerations for the patient's safety and comfort
- Regularly monitor, record and report any change in patient's conditions
- Supervise and monitors the nursing staff in accurate recording patients medical information and vital signs
- Preparing time table for nurses and monitoring their performance
- Helping/assisting the nurse supervisor in administrative and management duties
- Coordinates patients care services with members of the health team
- Supervise and monitors in the preparation of patients for, and also assist them during examinations and treatments
- Train other nurses in patient care and business care
- Facilitate proper channel of communication
- Facilitate supervision in providing health teaching to patient and to his family of significant others so that they may understand this illness and participate actively in his care
- Conducts research work related concerning to the hospital mandate of vision and mission
- Must be compassionate and have a lot of patience in rendering care and can tolerate high work related stresses which able to adapt changes willingly
