Hello all,

I had a query regarding my French Master's Degree certificate.
I completed my masters from France and obtained a "Diplome d'ingenieur"(Mechanical) degree.

1. Does anyone know if I need to get an ECA for this degree as well? Or is it already recognized in Canada?
2. Are there any additional benefits due to this degree since the Master's Degree is done in French language?

Cheers,
Nishant

No equivalent.
The Écoles d'ingenieur are very particular.
You do need an ECA.
My French diplome d'ingenieur gave me a master degree.

No extra points for the language unless you take the TEF...
$300 for the ECA + $400 for the TEF.
Welcome to Canada :-)

1. If the degree is not from Canada, it needs an ECA, simple as that.

2. The only benefit from having a French diploma is that you can submit it as is, without providing an English translation of the text.

As Realben says, you still need to provide TEF results if you want to benefit from being fluent in French.

I see.. I'll have to re-evaluate my French skills to justify taking this test :)
Thanks man!

The TEF is really not an easy test. I scored the max but only because I'm French.
You have to write a short essay about an article (and the essay has to make sense of course).
And for the "speaking" unit, I had to convince the jury to install solar panels on their roof :o. Pretty easy when you're a native but it can be very tricky if your skills are limited...
It's your call to decide if you want to pay $400. If you really need the extra points, it can be worth the shot.

It's also a ticket into getting invited to apply for a provincial nomination to Ontario, New Brunswick, and Prince Edward Island (if you don't to go through QSW), if one's EE points aren't high enough for a "direct" ITA...but if you say this degree will be evaluated as a masters, then maybe OP won't need to. :)

I think I should be able to get an average score atleast for TEF. I got a certificate from my college which states my level being C1 at that time. But yes, if a native French speaker is saying it's not an easy test then that tells me something ;D

You mean to say with masters degree, the TEF score won't have as much weightage to justify taking the test?

Having a masters degree in EE is generally good, but it depends on other factors like your age, work experience, and IELTS results.
You haven't mentioned your score yet, but if you can get to minimum 482 CRS (as of the latest draws) without taking the TEF, then you won't really need it.

You can get an idea here: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/skilled/crs-tool.asp

I am planning to take IELTS next month. Being single, it has also become difficult to gain some additional score.
But for now when I checked my CRS, I am hardly getting 367!! :'( That's abysmal..482 seems like wayyy too much given my current situation. I've searched on the link to increase your score but I'm still confused as to how people achieved such a high score without nomination.. :o
