How is Fort McMurray to stay with family ? Is it a developed location or is it preferable to stay in Calgary (for family) and shuttle between FM and Calgary on weekly basis ?

You will got more hotel reviews in Fort Mcmurray when you check expedia or tripadvisors. I think Edmonton is closer to FM than Calgary.

Fort McMurray is brutually cold. If your family isn't used to it, it will be harsh.

It's a 13 hours drive from Calgary to FMM..... not really reasonable to make on a weekly basis.

Fort McMurray is not ideal for family. Everything is costly. Better to stay in Edmonton or Calgary. Many companies charter you to FM. You work for 3 weeks and get one week off. My friend's family lives in Edmonton and he goes further up north of FM to work. He comes back every 2-3 weeks. Makes good money during your young days.
