hi.. i am a food counter attendant at mcdonald's grande prairie in Alberta. my contract is 2 years. i would like to ask for inputs and advice on how to get my spouse and son. i have heard that PR here takes so long, my co-workers have been working here for 5 years and still they cannot get their family. is there any suggestion how can i get them here? any suggestions, inputs and advice will be very useful. thank you.

As a low skilled worker, you don't have the right of an open work permit for your spouse. If they want to come, your husband has to apply for his own work permit and a TRV for the child.

hi Leon, as for my spouse's work permit, does it need to be skilled?(under NOC 0, a & B) -- in order to have my son on a TRV? my spouse has a job offer as an FCA (noc6641) also.. thanks

Generally it is the privilege of skilled workers to bring their family with them. For example he can not get an open work permit as a spouse because your permit is not skilled. However, if both parents are on work permits, the embassy may give a TRV for the child. He should ask the embassy in your home country.

Have you looked into daycare options for the child if you are both working? Depending on your province, it might not be cheap.

Hi Leon

Thanks for your reply. Regarding the daycare here in Grande Prairie, it doesn't come cheap. It would turn out that all our salaries will be put into daycare. I have another option (which if i may, ask your opinion on this) -- to apply as immigrant. However, do i need show money for that kind of application? Thank you for your kind response. I need opinions, answers and suggestions. :)

It depends how you apply to immigrate (through which program). But yes - often you must show that you have enough money to support yourselves when you first arrive. You should start by determining if you qualify to immigrate. The options are here:

http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/immigrate/index.asp

Depending on your province, it is possible that you could be sponsored by your employer through PNP. You would not have to show money to support your family if you are already working. However, even if you all do get PR, you would still have to work out the daycare for your son. Of course with PR, you and your husband would also be free to look for better paid jobs. You would also qualify for child tax benefit.

hi Leon, thanks for your reply. Hope you won't get tired answering my queries.. Regarding the PNP, my employer does not sponsor. So i have no other choice but to apply as immigrant together with my son and spouse. I just have one question, which option do i qualify? i am only a food counter attendant (semi-skilled), and the choices are skilled, canadian experience class, investors, PN and sponsoring your family. i need some insights, suggestions and advise.. Thanks a million, Leon :)

1. Not eligible for CEC must be a skilled position.
2. Investors is presently closed, and have you looked at how much money you require to Qualify? Presently $800K Federally.
3. If your employer won't support your PNP application, then to tell the truth, I think you are out of luck to emigrate.

@PMM, thanks. i just need time to shift my occupation to a skilled one, i guess. maybe it is not yet time to get my family movin' here. thanks for the reply! :)

If you get promoted to shift manager, you will be skilled. You would need a new LMO and a work permit to reflect that. After 2 years of working as skilled, you could apply for PR under CEC.

Another option would be to look for a different employer, either a skilled job or a low skilled that qualifies under PNP and an employer who will sponsor under PNP.
