Flying into Canada after approval

Hey everyone,

I was wondering if I could get confirmation on something..

Once approved and we fly back to Canada, is there any restriction on the route you can take?
I've sponsored my Australian partner and wondering, are we allowed to fly from Australia via USA into Canada (flights are cheaper!)? He would get the transit visa (ESTA) for the USA and then the ETA/his partnership visa for Canada?

I understand there are people coming from countries where it is too far for a direct flight which kind of cancels out this question but I just want to be sure as we have had visa confusion in the past.
