Sorry.. This was supposed to be posted so much earlier, this happened in Dec 17, 2015.

My wife and I want to share our experience of getting a spouse work permit under a IEC work permit.

I came to canada with a Closed Work Permit under IEC Young Professional category. My wife came with a visitor visa.

1.Got to Point Roberts/Boundary Bay.
2.Crossed to American side of border
3.American Official asked us what do we want to do in US. We said, “we are only flag polling. We want to go back to Canada”.
4.Officer gave us a paper, Nothing stamped on passport
5.Walked back to Canadian side of border
6.Canadian Official asked us for our documents and told us to sit
7.We waited for about 20 minutes only
8.My wife got her passport with her Open work permit for the same duration as my work permit

Documents:
  • Proof of relationship (marriage certificate)
  • Proof of status (passports/visas)
  • Pay stubs, All documents I had from employer
We actually had all the forms as if we were going to apply online/mail. I don't think it was necessary but if I had to do this again I would take them all again because that was how it worked ;)

We hope this can help someone in a similar situation.

Best of luck! ;D

Finally, someone from the future!! Did you meet me by any chance? Was I a permanent resident?

5 years later, came across this and it is very helpful. Do you know if this applies to spouses for those in the Working Holiday visa IF they are also in a skilled 0, A or B?
