A negative is the original piece of film that was used to make the final print.

What office is this letter from?

We had ours taken digitally by a friend who is a photographer. So the "negative" is an image file on his computer. What the hell do we do if they ask if for negatives with medicals?

Also what is the point of providing the photos in the first place if they are just going to ask for more of the damn things with medical requests? :)

I guess the digital photo you have taken must have the negative from where your photo was developed. So no worries. But they need a passport size photo for medical which was different from the previous ones.

It is all about hoops, just more hoops :)

Mine was asked to bring 2 photo for each family members (Sydney, Australia)... However the negative might be asked for the X-ray as digital image to put with the X-ray film/plate as proof of ID.. I can remember someone during Medical in India was advised to bring digital format of photo on a CD which you can think of. However they gonna do the same with the negative to get digital impression on the X-ray film I guess

In this case it is not an xray:

Seems rather odd why they would assume that a negative was available, they are pretty rare nowadays.

I took my own passport from a commercial photographer! He takes several hundreds in a day. If he does not keep the "negatives", what happens in this case

They need negative, still confused.
I guess we have to talk to the medical representative.

The best way to get confirmed about it is to talk with your local DMP when you gonna ask for an appointment. The front desk staff of DMP are all very cooperative and experienced as well to offer you with the best and most practical advise as they deals with similar cases of queries everyday... All the best

This letter is a very old format that ND VO uses for medical requests. They have not bothered to change it with the times! These days the DMP takes a digital image of yours at the time of X-ray & imprints it with the X-ray shot. So negatives are not required.

Speak with your DMP when taking the appointment for medicals, he/she will clarify it. Take only the 5 passport size photographs.
