Hello there :)

I just graduated as a Registered Nurse in Switzerland and want to move to Canada this summer, together with my husband. As far as I'm concerned it can take up to 12 months to get my degree registrated in Canada. For this time I would like to work as a health care assistant in the Yukon or northern BC. I don't have any work experience yet (in addition to my apprenticeships in school --> over 3'000 Hours of practical experience) and I would have to find an employer who could offer me an LMIA as a health care assistant.

Would I have the chance to get a work permit in my situation after I found a willing employer?

Thanks for your help!

Caregivers aren't eligible to bring dependents with them (this is only possible if you are working in a NOC A, B or 0 skill level occupation). So this plan could work for you alone. But your husband wouldn't be covered and would have to qualify and apply for a work permit on his own merits.

thanks for your quick respond scylla! Do you know how big is the chance to get an open work permit for my husband, if i would start studying health care assistent this fall? His occupation is car mechanic, he's inexperienced as well though and would acctually prefer to work in an other occupation..

Thank you one more time!

Should be very high provided the program you are attending is full time, you are attending a recognized school and you hold a study permit. Make sure you pick a public college. Stay away from private colleges.

Thank you for your valuable informations scylla! Well it's possible that I'm already a bit to late to start studying health care assistant this fall.. We've already got a rejection.. But do you think I would have a big chance to get a work permit from the government (If the employer would get the LMIA)? Or could it still get pretty difficult without enough work experience that counts?

Sorry - I don't quite understand your question regarding the LMIA and work experience that counts.

What have you already been rejected for?

I applied for the health care assistant course at a college and got rejected because they don't take international students anymore.
My question is: presumed I would get a job offer including LMIA to work as a health care assistant, would I get a work permit eventhough I don't have any work experience yet (aside from the placements at nursing school)?

Is there a reason you don't want to stay in Switzerland and work for at least a year?

well, there are a couple reasons for us to move to Canada as fast as possible :) The last 5 years We've been to Canada every year..
And now that I finished studying we just wanna try it. If we don't make it, we might have to fly back and work in Switzerland first, we know that.
