Hello all,

I am a dual citizen of England and Canada currently living in London and sponsoring my British fiancé for entry into Canada.

Does the Canadian government look into my British finances to determine whether or not I’m eligible to sponsor her? I have credit card debt in both countries and am worried that they might say I’m ineligiable.

Hello all,

They don't look at that. Read the full eligibility criteria here to put your mind at ease.

You will need to demonstrate in writing that you have a plan for how to support yourselves when you move to Canada as part of the application. There's a bit on the checklist where they ask for that.

As a side note, given that you are not currently resident in Canada you will need to demonstrate that you intend to return to Canada with the PA once she is granted PR. There are tips on how to do that here. I'd begin to create as much of a paper trail as possible for you, the sponsor, in terms of planning to move back to Canada, especially if you've been away for a long time.
