Hello,

I'm wondering if anyone can help me with this. I've recently stopped work, I'm nine months pregnant, my husband is American and still a nonresident. He has no SIN. To apply for Maternity EI he has to have one, and 000000000 doesn't work as it does for taxes. I've been calling Service Canada for TWO WEEKS, four or five times a day, and cannot get through.

Does anyone have any advice or experience with this? I'm hoping to get to their office on Monday, but it's not easy for me to get there at this stage (and I don't want to go into labour while in there) so I figured I'd ask first.

Thank you!

It’s highly unlikely your husband can collect EI benefits. To be eligible le he must be employed at the time of application in an insurance work and have 600 hours of insurance employment. If he is a non resident with no SIN number he probably does not meet the requirements.

https://www.canada.ca/en/services/benefits/ei/ei-maternity-parental/eligibility.html

To be eligible for EI parental benefits, each parent who applies for benefits must have accumulated at least 600 hours of insurable employment in his or her qualifying period.

Hi

As a non-resident, he can apply for an ITN. Perhaps that would work.

Oh, I know that. He's not applying for anything at all. I'm trying to collect my maternity EI and Parental EI, which I do qualify for. We just can't share parental leave, which is fine and not what I was applying for anyway. In order to file Maternity EI, I have to enter his SIN which doesn't exist. Either that or select the option stating I don't know anything about the father, which would conflict with some of our other paperwork and taxes (obviously).

1. Have him apply for an ITN, check the box for filing an Income tax return: https://www.canada.ca/en/revenue-agency/services/forms-publications/forms/t1261.html

Stuck in the same situation. Can one apply for the shareable benefits if their spouse is a non resident? I am taking my paternity leave but wondering if there is any way I could get part of the shareable benefits? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!
