Hi to you all,

I thought I might ask around here for some advice before I start calling CIC.
I am currently in Canada on a Young professional visa which does not expire till March 2013 which is great. Before that I was on a work and holiday visa for my first year in Canada.
I am a Dutch citizen and I have a Canadian girlfriend whom I lived with for longer than a year which means we are officially common law.
We are currently working on getting everything together for a overseas sponsorshop, meaning that she will sponsor me to get myself permanent resident status. While going through the process I need to get myself a Canadian Police check as I have lived here for longer than a year, I was told to get fingerprints taken at one of the various private R.C.M.P. accredited fingerprinting agencies which I went to today.
When I got there they told me that they need a letter from Citizenship and Immigration Canada. This letter must include the address for third party results submissions and should have a CIC file number. How do I get this File number when I am still working on getting all the documents together to complete the overseas sponsorship application? I don't understand, do I just mail everything in and wait for a response by immigration with my filenumber included in that? I am scared that my application will be refused if there's something missing in my application.
Any advice is much appreciated, thanks alot.

Cheers,

Basser

For Family Class applications, you do not apply personally for the police check from Canada. CIC will do that themselves. You need one for every other country you've spent 6 months or more consecutively in since age 18.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for your quick reply.
I believe in the forms that I printed off(Checklist) it says that I do need one, so you're saying basically just submit my Dutch Police Check and the rest will be done by CIC?
Thanks once again.

Yes, if you haven't lived in a third country over 6 months time.

You can see this on CIC's website at: http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/security/police-cert/north-america/canada.asp

"How to obtain a police certificate - Canada

Do I need to provide a police certificate when applying for permanent residence?
Only in certain cases. The Canadian visa office will tell you if you need a Canadian criminal record check while your application is being processed."
