Buffy - I have a NEXUS card (though I got it in Canada) and it is great. Makes border crossings a breeze.
What an amazing idea! I didn't even realize it existed... Thanks guys.

Definitely thinking of getting one now. :)

I applied a couple of days ago. I can't WAIT to get approval and the interview. I am hoping it will make bringing my personal possessions across the border alot easier. Bury them in the trunk and coast through :D

Hi everyone!

Long time no see ;)

This waiting is really starting to annoy me! :D All I do is exercise or sleep, LOL. I am not even checking my ECAS because I doubt there is anything happening yet. I am hoping they will start processing my stuff on July.. but who knows right! :)

Hopefully everyone is doing well, at least the summer is coming!! Something to be happy about ;)

Thanks Tom, I'm totally stressed out with the process of "visiting" Canada. Trying to figure out what is essential and what isn't is a nightmare!!

Nexus is a program between the US and Canada where PR or citizens of either country can apply for a Nexus Card. You fill out an application and they will do a background check on you in both countries. After that is done you go in for an interview and they go over the rules of the program and if you are approved it allows for expedited entry into Canada and US. There is a special lane at certain borders where you drive through and I guess scan your Nexus card. They will do a quick visual inspection and you are done. No interview at the border about what you are bringing or why you are going over the border. I am just going but what I read but it sounds like a few others here have the card and can tell you better. I just hope I get approved quickly. :)

But a PR has still to get a US visa...correct?

I don't think so.....I believe once you have PR you can apply under Canada PR as it's a program between US and Canada. As long as you are legal you *should* be able to get a Nexus card. Here is the link to more information about the program.

https://help.cbp.gov/app/answers/detail/a_id/227/~/nexus---general-information

WAIT.... I found the answer. :)

"NEXUS membership is available to any law-abiding citizen or permanent resident of the United States or Canada."

I almost forgot to add.......if you are traveling with anyone else when crossing the border, ALL people must have a Nexus Card or you will have to use the regular lanes. If you go through Nexus and only one person has the card it is grounds for removal from the program, or so my wife told me. She went for her interview on Monday. She should have her card in 2 weeks. She is going to drive down June 6thh and try it out. I can let you know how well it works at that time. :)

Yes but maybe they mean........or permanent resident of the United States or Canada who holds a valid US visa maybe?
I am sure that US will not stop requiring visas for PR's of Canada
Nice idea this Nexus card but I believe that the governments already have too much info about us and I dont see anything good coming out of that in the future! Of course it is just me because I have seen to many sci-fi movies about totalitarian societies where everyone has a file from here to California!

I hope you don't take me serious on this! I love technology and the age of information as I work within it! But sometimes I become a skeptic

I understand where you are coming from completely. I agree they have way too much information on us but the way I look at it is that if they want to get information on me they will get it. I can't hide anything from them so why bother fretting over it. In the meantime I will use my Nexus card and be happy crossing the border. lol

;D :p ;) 8)

Buffy - I believe if you do have stuff to declare, you are technically supposed to tell the border officials. Just like when I travel by plane and use those NEXUS kiosk, it does ask me if I have stuff to declare. But via land, I think you have to proactively tell them. Otherwise it is assumed you don't. And if you do have things you need to declare and don't, it is a violation.

I never had anything to declare myself so I don't have any personal experience. But I recall being told this after I got my card.

Yes, you are correct. I forgot to add that part. I don't know if you have to declare if you are under the limit or not. Example, I travel alone and bring one case of beer to Canada. I am allowed one case but anything over I would have to declare and pay duty on. I am unclear on that part.

I know that when I travel on Thursday I am only bringing my personal possessions, albeit a whole bunch of them!! I have a full box of my son's winter clothes and a large suitcase with my winter clothes. On top of that toys, comforter, sheets, etc. If they open my trunk I don't know what they will say but I will just be honest and tell them that we are starting to bring some items up now because we are hoping to get our PR by winter. It's not like I will be wearing a winter coat, boots, sweatshirts and long pants right now!!!! lol

No you don't. It is only an issue if you do have to declare

Hi guys

Haven't lived in Canada for over 23 years now. I remember back in the 80's at the borders there were Immigration and Customs departments. From what I understand now they are unified to one called CBSA. Is that true?
At those years the two services did not even carry guns. Now i see that they look like a tactical force of police!
