Hello ,

Below is an extract from an official CIC release today:

"Nearly 50,000 people have become Canadian citizens since a new decision-making process came into effect on August 1, 2014. That is a 172 percent increase from the same time period last year.

Recent reforms have also allowed decision-making officers to make progress on the backlog of so-called “non-routine” cases, including ones where residency questions persist. Almost half of all cases in which a residency questionnaire (RQ) was issued prior to November 2013 have been resolved with the applicants receiving their citizenship. Thousands more applicants who had been issued RQs are about to write their tests. These files will be evaluated by a record number of decision makers with the onus on applicants to prove they meet the requirements
."

If I apply now, what will be the processing time?

Well it depends a lot upon your local office (and sometimes on individual case) ,however for routine applicants if you are in Ontario specially GTA , Vancouver etc you should be looking at 6+/- months . If you are in Prairies around 18-20 months (based on previous timelines) not sure with the new decision making model ,though.

Just a quick question, why did the citizenship process become faster all of a sudden and why was it slower before?

more funding. more resources. Increase in fee 4 times . These could be some factors

In that case, I don't mind paying those extra fees.

Elections next year dude!

The NDP and Liberals raised the point of the Conservatives incompetence by stating they break everything they touch.. and as an example the Immigration and Citizenship process that was on average 6 month during the Liberals times..
All the frustrated New citizens are voting NDP and Liberals.. I know I won't vote Cons! if I will get My citizenship before October 2015

When are the elections next year? So if NDP or Liberals come to power are they going to overhaul the citizenship bill C-34. Are they going to reduce the qualifying time and make other changes in favor of immigrants?

My bad I don't understand the Canadian politics, but is CIC governed by conservatives or is it independent?

With elections due next year, is this a good time to apply for Citizenship? The conservatives will speed up the process in the hope that new citizens vote for them, trying to keep them happy ?

Indeed, otherwise they won't move a finger

majority of the immigrants live in Ontario and yes, their processing time have decreased but the rest, MB and west are still sitting at 24 months, maybe the overall timing have decreased but that's because of the Ontario/QC applicants... lol... not for all Provinces...

so this number tells me nothing... perhaps they are fact.

So many holes in these claims by Minister Alexander. This release only makes them look good for media purposes thats all.Why doesn't he visit Calgary CIC for once and implement additional and serious solutions to the problems that are ingrained here?
