I'm a US citizen, Canadian PR and filing for the first time since moving here. I did not know about the physical presence test for claiming the foreign earned income exclusion. In 2017 I was in the US for work for 3 months, then did several 1 - 2 week trips since then. The way the dates of those trips fall, I can't get 330 days in Canada in a 12 month period even with the tax filing extension - really poor planning on my part.
My question is this - has anyone else out there had this happen? How bad was it?
Or if anyone has some advice on ways to get around this situation, really don't want to be double taxed, but it is my own fault so there's that....
