Extension to become common law

Hello, I have currently been here for 4 months and am looking to extend my stay. Due to problems, I am unable to sign on the lease until early May. I would like to extend my stay till may of next year, and will ask for that.
I can show I have the necessary funds to be provided for during the extra year long stay, and I will say that I would like to extend it for common law. I am from the US so I am visa exempt. One thing that worries me is the ties I have to the US are not very strong. All of my family is from the US but that is about it. I am worried this will result in a rejection of application. Can anyone maybe say how the chances of it getting approved are? And also what things would help?

people who are applying to extend their stay to become commonlaw for PR purposes are rarely denied extensions. No one is going to be able to tell you what will happen. all you can do is submit what you have and hope for the best. if anything, they would just give you a shorter extension than you requested and you would need to apply for another extension down the road.

Oh ok because I would need until May of next year. And success rates are really that good? You just took a whole world of stress off my shoulders buddy.

You mean May 2017 - right? That won't be an issue.

I think they mean they won't be able to sign the lease until May 2017, and will be asking for an extension to May 2018 to allow common law proof of one year from that lease. (OP, right? Based on first post)

I thought this sounded familiar. Existing poster who create a new user ID. Question has already been answered a few times I believe (under the old user ID)...

OP - maybe stick with one user ID?

Still, one thing that confuses me. I still need to show that I will go back to the US right? Even though I show I would like to do this for common law how should I go about it?

My common law spouse is from Italy (visa exempt) and has applied for extension twice and had no issues receiving the extension. The first extension we stated we wanted to establish common law status and received a year extension. The second one we had just sent in our application and stated we wanted to be together while waiting for his application to be processed, we included the payment receipt, as well as a copy that his medical had been performed. We did not provide ties to Italy or a return ticket, however did provide proof of funds and incdicated we understood the rules when it comes to being on a visitor status. We asked for a year and they gave him 18 more months.

Did you show proof of ties for the first extension? Seems hard to prove when you are wanting to stay with your partner

No we didn't. Basically, we each wrote a detailed explanation letter on how we met and the progression of our relationship and that we understood that he was just a visitor in Canada and was not able to work, etc. He didn't really have any concrete ties to Italy (was self employed and no immediate faimly) but that didn't seem to make a difference in this case.
