Hi all,

I have a question that pertains to my post graduation work permit in Canada. I hope you could help me as I've searched the bank but couldn't find a relevant answer to my case.

To set the scene, I graduated from a Canadian university in June of 2014 and applied for a post graduation work permit soon after. I understand that the work permit's duration is commensurate to the length of time spent at the university (Sept 2010 - June 2014), up to a maximum of 3 years.

However I only received a 1 year work permit which ends at around the time of my passport's expiry (May 2015) which unfortunately I haven't been able to renew until recently.

My question is now that I have renewed my passport, can I now claim the remaining 2 years that I was eligible for (but wasn't given due to my passport)?

And if so, is it through this link (cic.gc.ca/english/work/extend-stay.asp)? I don't see a relevant option for me to choose.

Thank you in advance for your help.

Hi tektonik00,

You can definitely apply for the remaining 2 years, however I would suggest you to do that as soon as possible as the current processing time for PGWP is 56 Days (I believe it is not the Calendar but the Working Days).

Also, regarding the remaining info I would call CIC.

Hello Gary,

Thank you for your response. What if I do not have my renewed passport on hand yet? Can I just submit my application first, then update the application with my passport scan when I receive it? I'm really afraid my embassy will take its own sweet time.

Thank you.

I think you will need to passport number to initiate an PGWP extension. You probably won't know it before you have it in hand.

Sorry buddy, but as far as I know (I am recent graduate) you will not be able to claim 2 years as PGWP is one-time permit and if you do not have enough time in your passport it will be issued only until the end of your passport. My wife had to make new passport before applying for her 3 years PGWP. I am wondering why your college/university advisers didn't tell you that. Or maybe you were not attentive enough. Good luck.

Check out the story on some other people on this forum. If you are suppose to be eligible for 3 years and only got 1 year because of passport expiration, you can claim the remainder once it's renewed. But yes otherwise you can't extend the 3 years PGWP it's once in lifetime. (Of course you can continue to work by getting WP with LMIA)
