Extension before spousal sponsorship

Hi, I dont have still all my documents gathered for the spousal sponsorship. Can i send the extension to change conditions so i can at least get more time to apply in the meantime? I dont know if i can apply for the extension before the spousal spons. Instead of sending it all together, is it possible?
