Hello!

I'd appreciate any help with this one. I am currently in Canada, with an application for PR currently underway as an Outland application in the Family Class as the Spouse of a Canadian (FC1).
I've been here since November 15th, and I was intending to extend my stay as a visitor while the application is underway. HOWEVER, I cleverly managed to lose my passport.
Genius. So, I'm waiting for the UK to supply my with my new passport. My concern is, that if I do not have my passport until after the 30 day minimum required for an extension of visitor status will I be able to extend my stay? I will probably have it around May 1st, which is about 15 days until I would have to leave.

Does anyone have any experience with this? Is it still possible for me to extend my stay, or should I just head back to the UK? It's not the end of the world if I have to go home, but I was hoping not to have to leave my wife if possible!

Cheers guys!

Hi DGT,

btw thanks for your advices for entering Canada to wait for the PR. I got in pretty smoothly with all my supporting documents. :)

What comes to your case.. On their webpage it says you should apply 30 days before your status expires. So it doesn't sound like it's the borderline. I had Working Holiday Visa before and I applied for an extension maybe 20 days before it expired. I believe the same "30 day rule" applied to that one. That time I understood that the 30 day limit is because then you might have the answer before your current visa is expired. In any case you are allowed to wait in Canada for the result, so there is no harm doing it.. But this is just my opinion. :)

If you can't make the 30 days, can you go to the US border and flagpole (not technically admitted to the US) to get a new passport stamp?

The 30 days is a guideline. If you can't make it, you can do your best - but don't overstay.

If the 30 mark arrives without a passport, I would contact CIC and your Embassy in Canada for help. It's possible they have alternative remedies for you. Did you save a photocopy of your passport? If not, next time - make a full color copy of your picture page and any pages with stamps! Keep it in a safe location. :)

Btw, my husband lost his once. It was under the seat of his truck. However, he's the Canadian so it wasn't a huge ordeal.... :P

PS: Your long count joke is hilarious!

Thanks guys!

Glad to hear you had no problems Fin! Amikety, I do indeed have a photocopy of my original passport, but I don't think it'll help me as after submitting my LS01 to the UK, it is now null and void! Honestly, I think I should just head back to the UK if it isn't here in time. I think CIC would be confused by my flagpole-ing in this situation and it would probably ring some alarm bells about illegal work. Don't want to do ANYTHING that will jeopardise our future! It's so annoying. I know exactly what stretch of street that I lost the passport, and I went back 5 minutes after dropping it to look, but alas, nowhere. Anyway, thanks guys!
