So one-way ticket or round-trip ticket to Canada doesn't really play a factor? The immigration officer is just looking to know that you'll leave Canada if your immigration papers don't get approved?

My American husband is coming to see me here. He's not working anymore, so he's free to travel. We still have our rental place in the US, but we were going to purchase a one-way ticket and decide on a flight home at a later date (when seats are cheap and he needs to check in our rental). Our spousal sponsorship has been sent in, but I haven't yet been approved as a sponsor… Still waiting :)

Thanks everyone. This thread is helpful and I hope it stays alive with more input and stories of experience.

I posted this link, not sure if you read it - http://britishexpats.com/wiki/Spousal_Sponsorship-Canada#Can_I_wait_in_Canada_while_my_application_is_being_processed:_Dual_Intent

As you've already submitted the app, he should be fine. If you want to cover your bases, buy a fully refundable separate ticket back to the US and cancel it after he enters.

Thanks for the link.

And ok, we'll look into prices for a refundable round trip.

Just to update the situation, we came back into Canada from visiting her parents for the week in the states and we updated the immigration officer with our spousal sponsorship. I provided the letter stating I was approved for sponsorship and explain that we are now in the second stage of her being approved as a permanent resident. The immigration officer created a visitor record for her so she is now in the system and will make coming in and out of Canada alot easier.

When talking with the immigration officer he asked if she was going to obtain a work permit and this confused me because I thought work permits were only granted if she was applying inland which we are not, we decided to go outland so that she was able to travel and visit her parents from time to time during the ongoing process. Is there a way she can work because the immigration officer made it sound like she just applies for a work permit through CIC and that's it, some clarification would be greatly appreciated.

It sounds like the officer thought you were applying inland. He may have assumed it since you are otherwise living in Canada. But you are correct, there is no work permit option for outland applicants.

Glad she was able to come over the border with no issues! :)

That's good news, Cleric515. I knew it would all go smoothly.

As for the work permit, she could apply for one as a completely separate procedure, but I don't think that would make any sense for you because it would take longer than the spousal PR, I think.
