Hello,

I was admitted to Canada under the ETA visa waiver from the U.K. At the end of my permitted six months as a visitor, I wish to extend my stay. If I apply for an extra month, will I be granted just up till the date I request, or do you automatically get another full six months if the request is granted.

Also, as far as proof of funds, will a printout of a bank account do. Is wishing to travel around more in Canada an acceptable reason, generally? What kind of sum in the bank account would be seen as acceptable for a six month extension if I applied for this outright?

Many thanks for any replies.

First an ETA is not a visa it is simply an authorisation for a visa exempt to board a plane destined for Canada and is valid for 5 years.

You use the extend stay as a visitor application and submit it at least before the 30 day window before your current authorised stay expires. You remain legal until a decision has been made even if your initial 6 months has passed by and processing of the application could take more than the month you plan to ask for anyway.

There are no guarantees on how long an extension might be granted for and as to how much to show in terms of funds thats impossible to quantify as could be influenced whether staying with friends, a hostel or a 4/5 star hotel. If you already been in Canada for near 6 months you should have an idea how much things cost and what your planned itinerary will be during the extension so estimate a rough cost.

Many thanks indeed for your swift and comprehensive reply.

If I apply to extend by a month, will the granted allowance be either another six month span or nothing at all, or do they tailor the granted extension length to exactly that which application wishes for.

How long an extension you receive will be up to the visa officer. This may be influence by things such as how long an extension you request, how long you have already been in Canada, your financials, etc.

Many thanks for that. By financials will a screenshot of my bank balance suffice, or are more specific financial details required?
As far as ongoing travel plans, do those need to be in day-by-day itinerary detail, or will a general outline be ok.

Oh, just to add, are receipts of my accommodation so far of any use, and/or a description of my visit so far;
And, is there old thread where this sort of thing is discussed in more detail so I needn't keep hassling you with questions! Many thanks once again.
