I understand where you are coming from. But the visa extension has nothing to do with intention to live in Canada. Visa extensions are meant for all type of visas. So when the application asked for original entry to Canada. It means just that. Your first time coming into Canada with a passport.

This is to help Canada track the applicants first visit to Canada and examine whether the applicants honoured the rules of visiting/working/studying.

Well myself as an example is:

I originally entered Canada in October to "live" with my wife. I had left Canada in March right before my first visit expired and before I applied for my first extension. So when I apply for my next extension (I only do six months at a time because I am paranoid) I will put October as the date I first entered Canada and March as the last date I entered Canada.

so they are talking the first time you entered to be with spouse? so if i visited my husband before we were married, that doesn't count? let's say i entered canada in september 2013, november 2013, january 2014, march 2014, (intentions for) june 2014, then hope to go back sept 2014. i also entered canada prior to getting married in 2012, 2011 and 2010, 2008. which one do i choose if i apply for an extension at the end of the year? i am so confused!!!

Well, let's hope they take the answer I put! I put the first time I've ever been in Canada, which was prior to even meeting my husband.
I explained along with my Letter of Explanation just so they know why I put the date I did.

My mistake. Was thinking PR sponsorship while writing it.

But yes we also submitted a photocopy of our marriage certificate with the visa extension as well.

The checklist IMM5558 does ask for copy of marriage certificate among documents required with visa extension.
Hm... well it does not give me a place to submit the marriage certificate online. As I can only submit what they ask for and only one file per document that they request.
For example, they ask to show proof of means of financial support. I can not submit multiple files for pay stubs, bank accounts, etc. They all have to be on one file together.

The only things that it has that I am required to attach are:
-The application
-proof of means of financial support
-passport (pages scanned)
-Digital photo

Optional documents are:
-Letter of Explanation

I don't even have anywhere to submit the Document checklist. I believe the generated list of files I am required to submit suffices as the checklist online though...

Eek! My extension is submitted! I'm so nervous! :3
I can't imagine how much more nerve racking actually waiting for PR is!! hahah

Did you ask for a year? Let us know how it goes. I might build up the courage to ask for a year when I apply for my next one in July. It is so stressful isn't it lol?

I hope she/he did ask for 1 year extension. You may not get the 1 year but 6 months but chances are she/he will get 1 year. We asked for 1 year extension and gotten 1 year. Some have reported to ask for 1 year and ended up with 3 months or 6 months.

So if you ask for a year it is possible to just get less? I have been worried about doing it because I didnt want them to just deny it all together. This whole thing really turns one paranoid doesnt it? Lol

You are not 100% going to get 1 year extension because you asked for it. It is up to the CIC to decide how much of an extension they want to give you. Usually those on PR sponsorship inland usually get the 1 year extension due to the long PR timeline to complete.

When I went to the border, the agent there told me to apply for a visitor extension for my wife. I asked how long should I ask for. He replied "ask for 1 year extension", which is what we gotten.

To be honest.. I have read so much on asking for 1 year extension but when filling out the paperwork I wasn't sure where to put that request???
I put in my letter explanation that I'd like to stay visiting my husband through the process of finishing up the paperwork and through waiting for PR to be approved. So hopefully that's enough??

That should be alright. It is really up to CIC to determine how much on an extension you will get.

So relax and enjoy your weekend.

Yeah that was kind of my thought. I will def take a breather.

My husband requested a year and he only got 6 months. At least you can keep applying every time the visa runs out :)

Yeah but it cost you another 75 bucks to renew again.

Actually it's $100 now ;)

Yeah it depends when you apply and where from and how. Like I'm hoping to send everything in June, I', from the US and applying outland.
The average time seems to be around 6-9 months.
If they only extended my stay for 6 months, I would just leave after the 6 months, go home and get everything I have left together, go through it and wait for my COPR! ^_^

Just want to update everyone, my extension got approved!
Waiting for whatever they will mail me to see how long I've been approved for!!! Unless there is another way to find out???

So it took exactly two weeks from when I submitted it. :)
