My wife and I relocated to Canada (She is a Canadian citizen, I am in middle of PR application). We brought our US car with us and have not yet dealt with the import process, but we think it's time to get that going.

I know that the first step is exporting it from the US, which entails sending them paperwork 72 hours before you get to the US border, and then bringing the car there. I was also told that during those 72 hours, the car must stay in the US.

This is a problem for us, because we are already in Canada, and cannot get the car to to the US for three days. I was wondering if I really had to worry about this requirement. I mean, how would they would know if the car had been in Canada within that time frame? Does anyone have experience with this? If anyone has any other ideas that might help this situation, they would be greatly appreciated!

The US won't let the car in once the waiting period has started. It is possible to get the 72 hours waived. We did but it took them awhile to have mercy on us.
