Hi! I have some qns & would love to have them answered:

1) My PR card is expiring this yr. Would I get a renewal letter on getting it renewed such as like Health Card or I have to take initiative to renew it before it expires?

2) I need to travel next yr and wonder how long it takes to renew a pr card in general?

Thanks! :)

1. You have to take initiative to apply to renew it yourself.

2. It currently takes 93 days to renew your PR card, see http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/information/times/perm-card.asp

Hi Leon,
Thanks for the advice. Now here is the dilemma.
I realised my PR card has already expired in Oct 2012! I was too busy with other matters in my life & I totally forgot about it!

Would it be a problem to renew the card now or I have to reapply for my permanent residency from the start? :(

Thanks!

As long as you meet the residency requirements of at least 730 days in Canada in the past 5 years, you can apply to renew it any time. If you do not meet these requirements but you are in Canada at the moment, you should just stay until you have the 730 days and then apply.
