hi, i have a quick question.

my visitor visa was gonna expire last month and i was supposed to go back to my country before it expires but my flight got cancelled. so i ended up staying in canada until this covid 19 gets slow. and i tried to renew my visa but cic site reached me eTA page not visitor visa page so i applied for eTA inside canada. is this really right visa to stay in canada?

An ETA is for visa exempt passport holders and allows them to board a plane destined for Canada, it is not a visa that allows people to extend their stay in Canada

yeah i understand what eTA is that’s why i’m so suspecting... but it only gave me an option to apply for an eTA....

i went to so many different pages so i don't exactly remember how i did but i signed in and went to my account page on cic site, and i think i clicked some start application page and they asked me several questions such as what is my purpose of stay in canada, and they ended up telling me to apply for an eTA.

at this point you are in Canada without status if your visitor status expired last month and you applied for an ETA. How long have you been in Canada and what is your purpose of travel? I see that you have been in Canada for 2 years. Have you previously extended your visitor status?

Go to your account and see what you submitted. You really need to find this out because if you didn't apply to extend your visitor status, you are now in Canada illegally and need to apply for Restoration.

yes i came to canada with a work permit 2 years ago and at the point it expires i extended my stay as a visitor visa twice and was supposed to leave canada last month.

i searched for that overnight and finally found out what to do next but yeah apparently i need to restore my stay as a visitor visa.... it’s saying i can apply online but i don’t know how....

when i first tried i did the same way as i applied for an eTA ( went to my account page and started application then they asked me several questions including whats my current status to ensure what kinda visa i wanna apply for but there are no applicable answer options so i just chose “visitor” and when filling out the form i picked “other” as current status because my visitor expired at this time and when i tried to upload it they said i can’t upload the form i filled out because the status answer i filled out and i answered before i start filling out application doesn’t correspond ).

Note that applying for Restoration does not grant status. You are still in Canada illegally while the app is processing.
