ETA Refugee Hearings

Hi all, just wanted to share some information that was confirmed to me by an RPD member.

Hearings for claimants are expected to occur 15-18 months AFTER the claim is referred to the IRB. For example, if your case was referred to IRB in August 2017 then your hearing could be held somewhere around January 2019. (This does not include people from countries eligible for expedited processing).

However, in my opinion, the government will not be able to meet the 18 months deadline. There are about 41,000 refugee claims in the backlog and the government did not include any additional funding for the IRB in 2018. No funding = No more members for the IRB.

This is quickly becoming a shitshow and if the government doesn't fix it, Canada will start seeing cases like the ones in the US: https://globalnews.ca/news/3968545/jorge-garcia-deported-family-goodbye/

I completely agree with you regarding processing times. However the story you quoted above has absolutely zero to do with the refugee process or refugee processing delays - and is irrelevant to a refugee discussion. This is a case where someone was brought to the US illegally as a child (but too old to benefit from DACA) and who has lived in the US for decades since then without status, establishing a life and family there.
