Finally my husband has been approved ;D ;D and will receive his visa on June 20th ;D ;D. We are hoping he will be able to come the beginning of Aug. I have several questions for those of you who have already landed...

1. What paperwork is required other than the visa and passport?
2. What types of things should he declare when coming?
3. Will there be any problems since he will have to change planes in Paris... is there anything he will need there?
4. What should he expect at Toronto when he arrives?
5. Is there anything elsewe should be aware of?

As you can imagine we are thrilled to have been approved but we are also aware that nothing comes easily in this transition so any advice would be appreciated.

Peace and blessings

Congratulations!! He needs to bring all the paperwork that they mail to him - typically it will consist of his passport (with visa affixed) and his Confirmation of Permanent Residence (which is a multi-copy long form that they have him sign as part of the landing interview). Also, if he is importing items into Canada - whether at the landing or later on - he needs to have those items listed on a CBSA personal inventory form. If he is bringing some items at landing, and shipping other things later, he will need a form for each "shipment". Anything he imports into Canada as a new PR is duty-free, as long as it's included on the form(s).

The layover in Paris would be irrelevant to the fact that he is traveling to Canada to land. When he gets to Toronto, he tells the officer at Immigration that he is arriving to "land" - and he'll show his paperwork. That officer will direct him to "secondary" where they will complete the landing process. Basically they look over his paperwork, maybe make a few calls, ask him a couple of questions (whether he has committed any crimes since applying for PR, if his family "composition" has changed since applying for PR (like any children born outside of Canada), and something else I can't remember. Anyway, routine. Then they'll have him sign the COPR, they'll make sure they have a current address in Canada to send his PR card to, and that'll be about it. They may ask - or he should mention - if he has items to import either at that time or later, so they can refer him to Customs to complete that paperwork.

That's about it.

Awesome.. thank you very much. :)

Would you happen to know if he is bringing things like a tagine (traditional cooking dish) can he take it on the plane with him if it is breakable and able to fit in the overhead compartment? Is there a charge for bringing these types of things on the plane?

Check with your airline on what they allow onboard and check with folks who may have flown through the same airports he'll be flying through. Some, for example, have weight limits they strictly enforce whereas others are more focused on the size.

BTW, this post may help you as you complete the personal inventory form.

I have to say I feel lost in this area.

I gave hubby a laptop as a wedding gift...so it was bought here in Canada. He will be bringing it with him though.

I read on another post about listing toiletries and even his ring...why?

There are specific reporting requirements for jewelry (include photo of each piece) and for electronics (list each item with serial number). The link in Ohcanadiana's post above to the b4 help thread gives lots of details about what needs to be done. I believe the intent is to give us the privilege of importing our personal items duty free while preventing future games at customs. ;D

please, i have a concern related to your topic, it is about the airline companies... :)
u all know moroccan air line is too expensive, and the service is... ;D....
so i am thinking if i want to come to fly to canada, i ll use european air line then it will be cheaper but it will be like to stops over 2 different european countries just for transit, my question is:
DO I NEED TRANSIT VISAS TO STOP FOR TRANSIT IN THOSE COUTRIES, remember the stops will be in the aeroports and not for more than 4 hours each... :)
thank u so much
good luck to all

Thank you everyone for your replies and information.

I am surprised that he has to list clothing and such as well but no problem... we will do what it takes to get him here!! LOL

@ amineae80

I unfortunately do not know the answer for sure. But I believe you will not need any transit visas as you are not landing in those countries. I hope someone can answer for sure for you though.

Only one stop in a European country is allowed to transit without visa (TWOV) if the traveller has a visa for Canada. Two stops requires a Schengen visa or a visa for that country if they are not a part of the EU. Information about this can be found here:

http://www.delta.com/planning_reservations/plan_flight/international_travel_information/visa_passport_information/

Use the dropdown boxes to choose your resident country and stopovers as well as final destination. Delta did a good job on this site. Don't forget to hold down the Ctrl key to choose two countries in the Connecting Country box.

if you use De Gaules airport don't buy jam they will take it from you at the search area. those jam thieves. along with shampoos and every other liquid. they sell jam at the gift stores inside the airport, then security steals it from you cause they're jam and shampoo thieves.
