Hi there,
If I have a degree from an Indian university and it's in English, is it sufficient for language proof? Or do I still have to get the university to write a letter stating the studies were done in English?

Thank you.

@CLYL I have the same question too. Hope someone responds since the CIC site doesn't have detailed information about authorization from the university is required or not.

The instruction guide for the application is quite clear, actually:

You attended or are currently attending a secondary or post-secondary education program in English or French, either in Canada or abroad.

  • A degree, diploma, certificate or official transcripts from a secondary or post-secondary education program showing you studied in English or French, in Canada or abroad.
  • If the original document is in a different language, include:
    • a letter from the school showing that the language of instruction was in English or French along with
    • an official translation of the original document and
    • the address and contact information (phone number) of the education institution

So the degree certification and or provisional certificate would do as long as it is in English ?

I have obtained a letter from my wife's college for her because she did not have ielts or any other test. That was sufficient for her. We both have appeared in the interview also and they did not make any objection on it.

I submitted degree certificate and transcript. That is enough, no need for any letter from college.

Submit your degree certificate (English). No transcript needed. Also just to be on a safer side, I took the language assessment from YMCA -https://ymcagta.org/employment-and-immigrant-services/immigrant-services/language-assessment-and-referral-services

They just assess you (very easy assessment) and give the scores right away. That needs to be attached along with the application.

The key thing is “showing you studied in English or French”. I just have doubt because they could very well say it’s an Indian university so it may not have been taught in English.

Thanks everyone for the responses!

That doubt is baseless, because I have firsthand experience and know of numerous cases where Indian certificate/transcript has been accepted. If they dont accept yours, that'll be first case I'll hear. Keep us posted.

The diploma/certificate/transcript needs to be in English and this seems to be enough "proof" that the medium of study was English. I don't think it matters "where" it is from, as long as it is fully in English.
If it's more than one language (other than French/English), I would translate the non-English parts of the document, just to be safe.

Copy of the certificate should be good enough. if you have IELTS or CELPIP results you can submit them too.
