Hello everyone.

I am currently on an iec visa, so extension isn't possible. I'm engaged to a Canadian citizen and we plan to have a full wedding in a few years time. Since we've only been living together for 6 months we're exploring the possibility of getting legally married to make the immigration process faster.

Will we run into any problems with this? We have no problem proving to an immigration officer that our marriage is genuine. We have text history, call history, photos and both her and my family to prove it.

Note that it doesn't sound like you would meet the common law test of living together more than 12 months, so it won't just make your process faster, but possible.

You sort of answered your own question: if you won't have any problem because you have enough to prove, then you wont' have any problem.

But context matters: for example, if you are both from a culture in which large, traditional marriages are the norm, there may be more questions. If you're from cultures where civil marriages followed by a 'ceremony' at some different point are normal, probably not. From your short description, it sounds like you've been living together and known each other for years, so the 'arranged marriage' scenario clearly doesn't apply.

That said it may help if your civil marriage is 'public' like friends and family (ideally both familes) are present, even if it's not an enormous ceremony. It sounds like that shouldn't be a problem at least re her family.
