Early Arrival

Hi There,

I was wondering if someone will be able to help me with this question about arriving to Canada once you've got the Student Visa.

I am student from New Delhi, India. I wanted to ask how early a student can arrive in Canada once they are issued the Visa. My semester starts in September 2016. The visa is valid as of the date of issuance till 2 years, therefore is it ok If I travel in April or May 2016.

Technically you can arrive as early as you want to. However there have been some cases where students have been refused entry into Canada for arriving too early and told to return later - closer to the start of their studies. You cannot legally work until your classes start. So if you arrive early, you will need to make sure you can demonstrate that you have the extra funds to support yourself. If the officer suspects you are coming to Canada early to work illegally, you could be refused entry.
