duration of stay in canada with a visitor visa

I have landed in Toronto on July 25th 2012 on a visitor visa valid till 25th November 2012. Can I stay in toronto till january 24th 2013(the duration would be 6 months)

My mom's situation is similar. Her visa expires soon, I'd like to bring her in Canada for a 6 months stay. It means I should get an extension once she enters. Is she allowed to enter if she comes 1 month prior her visa's expiry date though?

On the other hand, if I'd like to send her papers for having her to get a new visitor visa from her country, is she allowed to apply while her visa is still valid?
