Hi,

This is my first time driving from Canada to any US city.

I plan to drive with my family from Toronto to New York.

What is the fastest route to get there?
Which highways should I avoid?
or is there any place that's a must see on the way there?

If we plan to avail the weekend, which day and time would you suggest depart or be at the border?
Which crossing do you suggest?

Any inputs will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

This is really a trip advisor Q. Just an advise, instead of taking I-81, take I-90 and I-87. I-81 has lot less service areas along the way.

Drove from Mississauga to New Jersey two months ago it took about eight hours one way. GPS is the way to go, if this is your first time to go it is unlikely you will be able to follow a specific route predetermined in advance. You can however do your research to understand how to avoid paid tolls which from my understanding do not really speed up the journey or shorten your route. Some tolls I came across near NJ only had the option to pay by cash (USD) if you did not have the EZPASS.

Make sure you activate roaming for your phone plan to get accurate updates on your route.
