I can't drive (I know, I know). What's the deal with driving in Alberta once I land? Could anyone provide me with any information? I have no idea where to begin. Cheers.

Do you know how to drive? If so, you can drive for a certain number of days before getting a Canadian driver license.

If you do not drive, why bother with driving? Take public transit.

No, I can't drive! See my original post. I want to drive because nobody in their right mind wants to wait for a bus or C-Train in Calgary, in winter, when it's -25 degrees centigrade when I can be in the warmth of my own vehicle.

As a student, I rather save money and take public transit despite the outside temperature was minus 40 degrees centigrade. 8)

Here's the link how to get driver license in Alberta:

You would have to get the drivers handbook. You can download as a PDF at http://www.transportation.alberta.ca/531.htm

Once you have studied for the test, you can go to any registry and book the written test. If you fail, you may take it again the next day, however, you'd have to pay again too. Once you pass it, you would get a learners license and that means you can practice driving with a fully licensed person at your side. If you don't know anyone who will teach you, you can go to a driving school. Because of the GDL system, you need to spend one year on a learners license before you can take the basic road test and get a GDL license. A learners license does not allow you to drive alone. You must always drive with a fully licensed person at your side. After you get the GDL license, you may drive alone and you must hold that for 2 years before you can take the advanced road test and get a full license.
